S3E4 (Endo 101) - Surgical Treatment of Endometriosis
Wednesday Mar 10, 2021
Wednesday Mar 10, 2021
Welcome to episode 4 of Endo 101!
Endo 101 is a mini-series that seeks to inform and educate on the enigma that is Endometriosis. My purpose in this mini-series is to talk about all the aspects of endometriosis, right from proper definition to treatment methods and even myths that are pandered about the disease. I am so privileged to be joined today by Mr. Thomas Bainton, the Endometriosis Fellow and a senior registrar in obstetrics and gynecology at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, in London, UK.
The last episode we discussed the path from symptoms to diagnosis and really went into the different hormonal treatment options for Endometriosis. Today, we will be talking about surgical treatments for Endometriosis, and why the gold-standard treatment for Endometriosis is excision surgery to remove the disease completely. It is also very important to understand that there are many factors that can require your doctors to offer various other treatments other than surgery. This could depend on your situation, for example, the desire to have children which means your fertility has to be treated as a priority, the location of the disease, e.g. if it is Deep Infiltrating bowel disease that could be complex and potentially require a colostomy bag, and so on. One thing that is very important is to understand all your options, and why your doctor thinks a particular approach is the best one for you.
So join us again on this episode as Tom breaks it all down for us!

Today, we are talking about the path from symptoms to diagnosis and treatment options for Endometriosis. Remember, that the gold-standard treatment for Endometriosis is excision surgery to remove the disease completely. However, there are many factors that can require your doctors to offer various other treatments such as birth control, hormonal treatment, pain management, pelvic therapy and so on. These options could depend on your situation, for example, the desire to have children which means your fertility has to be treated as priority, the location of the disease, e.g. if it is deep infiltrating bowel disease that could be complex and potentially require a colostomy bag, and so on. S2E18 - The Challenges of Treating Endometriosis in Nigeria, with Dr. Olajuwon Alabi
Wednesday Nov 04, 2020
Wednesday Nov 04, 2020
Today's episode is with Dr. Olajuwon Alabi. Dr. Juwon is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, the founder and Medical Director of Southshore Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Lagos Nigeria. Southshore is run both in Victoria Island and GRA Ikeja in Lagos. Dr. Juwon trained in Nigeria and also in Manchester and Leeds in the United Kingdom. He was trained in Minimal Access Surgery and developed interest in this subspecialty, and there got involved in a lot of Endometriosis cases. On his return to Nigeria, he realised the skills gap in laparoscopic surgery and decided in 2012 to start Southshore, which focuses predominantly on women’s health.
One of their specialties is the treatment of fibroids and endometriosis, he is an excision specialist and today I am excited to talk about what it is like treating endometriosis patients in Nigeria. We discuss the challenges, and we receive golden advice from Dr. Juwon on dealing with this disease.
Dr. Juwon has an Instagram account as well @drjuwonalabi for those who want to reach out to him.

S2E17 -The Bittersweet Early Diagnosis of Endometriosis, with Lily Avery
Wednesday Sep 30, 2020
Wednesday Sep 30, 2020
Today’s episode is with Lily Jane Avery, a 19-year Endometriosis warrior, and advocate. Lily was diagnosed with endometriosis at the very young age of 14, and she is one of the few who have had to carry this burden of a chronic disease at such a young age. Despite her early diagnosis, Lily was once told by her doctor to buy a colouring book to colour away her pain. This only made her fight even harder to be heard. Lily is not a victim, oh no! Instead, she has embarked on the very important cause of advocating for and educating both young and old about endometriosis and letting people know that the pain is not in their head. Lily started an Instagram account called @over.endo where she educates people on the various aspects of the disease. Please follow her and show her some love.

S2E15 - Racial Bias in Healthcare
Wednesday Sep 02, 2020
Wednesday Sep 02, 2020
“None of us alone can save the nation or the world. But each of us can make a positive difference if we commit ourselves to do so.” - Cornel West
Today's episode is with Amy, an amazing advocate for Endometriosis, and founder of 'In Sixteen Years of Endometriosis' Podcast, where she and her co-host Brittany give us incredibly uplifting accounts of their experiences dealing with Endometriosis for over 16 years. Amy is very active on social media, specifically Instagram, through her page ‘in16yearsofendo’, where she thoroughly educates the community on Endometriosis and the scientific research available and provides resources to support women with the disease. She also has a website https://insixteenyears.com/ where she has so many resources to educate and support women going through the disease.
Amy and I support each other a lot and share our life experiences, and we thought it would be great to do a podcast episode together. We realised that something that we had both been thinking about is racial bias in healthcare as well as access, or the lack of it, to healthcare in lesser developed countries like Nigeria. We decided that this is something we both wanted to explore, research and talk about and here we are!
Remember that you can follow me on instagram @notdefinedbyendo, and you can follow Amy @in16yearsofendo. This episode is airing on each of our podcasts, so kick off your shoes, get yourself a refreshing drink, and let’s have a listen!

S2E13 - Understanding the Assisted Fertility Process, with Kristen
Wednesday Jul 22, 2020
Wednesday Jul 22, 2020
Up to 50% of women with Endometriosis experience infertility issues. This means that many eventually choose to go through the process of assisted fertility. Over the years, the success rates of assisted fertility methods have increased, and 1 in 4 treatment cycles are said to be successful. For those less than 35 years old, the success rates increase to 1 in 3.
In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is when eggs are collected from the ovaries and then combined with the sperm in a laboratory dish, and any fertilised embryos are then implanted into the womb.
Today’s conversation is with Kristen, an embryologist whose job it is to care for the embryos from the time of egg retrieval to when is it safely implanted in the woman’s uterus. Kristen will be sharing with us what her job is like, what the process of IVF entails and what makes her job so fulfilling. Kristen's Instagram page is @ilikemyeggsfertilised. Go show her some love!
