Welcome to our 'Endo Research Unveiled: Seeking Answers' series on Not Defined by Endo Podcast.
Today’s conversation is with Dr Barbara Guinn, a Reader in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Hull.
As well as teaching the undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses in the Centre for Biomedicine, Hull York Medical School, Barbara also supervises MSc, MD and PhD students in their research. Barbara read Genetics at Aberystwyth University and received a PhD in Medicine from the University of Wales College of Medicine, Cardiff.
Following 4.5 years working at the University of Toronto in the Department of Immunology, Barbara set up her own research group in the Department of Haematological Medicine at King’s College London to identify new targets for the treatment of acute leukaemia. Barbara worked on the development of DNA vaccines to treat leukaemia at the University of Southampton and then started to work on ovarian cancer. In 2016 Barbara joined the University of Hull and began her work on developing new treatments for endometriosis and a urine test for endometriosis called EndoTect.
Barbara has three children and two dogs and loves to X. Her X handles are @BarbaraGuinn1 @GuinnLab.

She was diagnosed with endo at thirty-three, sixteen years after her symptoms began. She’s the content creator of the popular podcast called In Sixteen Years of Endometriosis. With her co-host Brittany, they laugh, cry, and shout about all things endometriosis. Amy is also the author of Finding Peace with a Devastating Disease. It's a beautifully raw and honest collection of seventy-six reflections on acceptance, meaning, and self-compassion. After a 20-year journey to diagnosis and a nearly 10-year journey with primary and secondary infertility, her aim is to connect, raise awareness and help others feel seen, heard, and free in their own truths and all aspects of their journey living with these conditions. Nicole believes in an inclusive community that does not exclude the voices and experiences of others.
